S. Burdick Street Water Main Improvements Project
Two year construction project - 2026-2027
The S. Burdick Street Construction Project is committed to enhancing our water supply through essential upgrades and community transparency.
General Information:
South Burdick is your street and it’s an important gateway to downtown, as well as the Edison and Vine Neighborhoods. Street construction is part of how we maintain our city, neighborhoods, and our places where we work, live and play. The water main along S. Burdick needs to be replaced. Actual construction doesn’t start until 2026, but this summer we are sharing design elements, information on what work will be done, and answering your questions.
The City of Kalamazoo is replacing outdated water main along the corridor of Burdick Street from W. Emerson St to Lovell St. The outdated water main is consistently breaking due to the age of the pipe. As part of the replacement, they are increasing the size of the pipe to meet the water demands of the community and replacing lead water services. The City Streets Department will be bringing the sidewalk into compliance and re-surfacing and re-striping the entire road.
There currently are no planned changes to the striping of the road. The City Wastewater Department is installing new two-way cleanouts on all sewer laterals and upsizing the main sewer line from Vine Street to Lovell Street to increase capacity to meet the demands of the community. The project construction will be phased over the course of two years with Phase 1 commencing in 2026 and Phase 2 commences in 2027.

Phase 2: Vine Street to Lovell Street
April 2027 to October 2027
Phase 1: W. Emerson St to Vine Street
April 2026-October 2026
